The village of Kournas is 43km from Chania and 20km from Rethimnon on a road turning south at 41km of the Chania - Rethimnon highway. Kournas Lake, old villages, Byzantine churches, a Minoan tomb and a cave are in the area around the village. In Patima (near Kournas) there is the church of Agios Theodoros which also has a fine, decorated tomb within the church. In Patima there are also the remains of Venetian buildings. The beaches on the east of Crete are either stony, man-made of grit from the mountains and topped with some sand from the ocean bed, there are a lot of beaches that in high season, benefit from shredded black bin bags and the rubbish that was once in them, washing up onto the beach! click here for one such beach! (at bottom of page) I personally found this region of Crete more tolerant to the huge numbers of strays, cats and dogs.
