We, Cretans, are permanently in love with our island and what
it stands for. We are in love with its spirit which evolved from vivacious Minoan
times through perpetual and eventful contacts with different races and
civilizations, the Dorians, the Egyptians, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the
Venetians, the Turks... This very special spirit transcends the limits of
culture; we have learnt to distinguish it in all aspects of our life. It runs
through the "rizitika" folk songs; it resides in plant motifs of ancient
earthenware; it characterizes the way a shepherd drives its flock of sheep to
the slopes of the Sfakian mountains; it is diffused in the aroma of "diktamos"
herb and adds fire to the eyes of a solitary priest saying mass at a small
country church, a handgun passed in it's belt...
Nowadays Crete's main
businesses are olive oil, wine and tourism. The latter is mainly centered along
the North coast. The South West is sheltered from the masses by huge mountain
ranges of over 2500 metres high. Only a few roads go south. There you arrive in
a better climate region, even better than the Mediterranean climate! Since the
mountains appear to sink directly in the sea, only small locations are suitable
for villages. This scales down the possibilities for holiday resorts. Since
Sfakia is quite remote, also the culture of their inhabitants is less business
focused. Hospitality is still an art over here, with good tavernas, fresh fish
and meat and very fair prices. The drinking water is mineral water from wells
deep into the mountains. The natural beaches are wells of mountain rivers, with
sweet water mixing with the sea. The best and most clear swimming water is here.
The hills and mountains are crossed by huge gorges; Sfakia's Samaria gorge is
the biggest of Europe, but there are many more and all can be walked fairly
easily. A ferry is connecting the villages along the South West coast; there is
no noisy ongoing road. Directly from your hotel in Chora Sfakion, the small
capital of Sfakia, you can start your daily programme: the beaches are only 25
meters away, more than 20 hiking routes start from here, all ferries come to
Chora Sfakion and there is a good bus connection to the East and the North, by
renovated 2 lane streets. You can also rent a car to explore the region, with
its many small traditional villages.
There are hundreds of cafes where one sits in the shade of a spreading plane,
oak, tamarisk or mulberry tree and sips a ‘’sweat’’ or ‘’medium’’ coffee, or a
glass of ‘’tsikoudia‘’ (raki) while playing a game of cards or ‘’tavli’’
(backgammon). There are dozens of tavernas and ouzeries serving some tasty ‘’meze’’,
a specialty of the area. Yogurt and honey, sweet tarts (kaltzounia), pies made
of wild greens flavored with fennel, fried cheese (staka), rabbit stew, cheese
pie from Chora Sfakion, cockles, boiled goat. In the city of Chania, at Malaxa,
at Vrisses, and other villages in the area of Rethimno, in Iraklio and its
villages and in the whole district of Lassithi. Fish, sea urchins, octopus and
cuttlefish cooked on coal and fried squid to be tasted at seaside tavernas. And
everywhere the delectable Cretan wine. Every saint’s feastday is celebrated with
gusto at dozens of villages throughout the island; all Crete throbbing to the
sound of the Cretan lyre and the rhythm of the local dances, the pentozali and
the sousta. Meanwhile the housewives are preparing a steamed Cretan pilaf and
special holiday fritters (xerotigana). In the shop windows of bustling Iraklio,
picturesque Rethimno, and Chania, elegant furs, precious jewelry and artist
silverware attract the visitor’s attention. In the shops of lovely Sitia and
tranquil Ierapetra and in mountainous Anogia one is impressed by the spread out
‘’patanies’’, traditional local woven fabrics in dazzling colors, and everywhere
one sees skillfully crafted ceramics and leather goods.

Welcome to hotels in Sfakia |
- Samaria George |
Sfakia,
in the southwest of Crete, is the famous and most authentic region of Crete.
Here you can find the last pieces of the old Cretan culture and nature, far
away from mass tourism. Whether you are looking for the nice and quiet, on the
natural beaches, or want to be active, with mountain hiking, swimming, diving
and fishing: this is THE place! By the way, did you know Sfakia is Europe's
southernmost part?
It is probable, that the majority of those setting foot in Sfakia may well
have walked the length of the Samaria Gorge and be one of the many
muscle-aching souls on one of the ferries that travel from the mouth of the
gorge, at Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakia (or Sfakion).
There to be collected by buses to return them to their hotels all over Crete.
If Sfakia, the village or the region, is your destination, you will probably
have driven, bused or taxied over the White Mountains - the Lefka Ori - from
Chania and elsewhere on the Northern coast, a journey that is memorable both
for the views, villages and the constantly repaired road that is possibly the
"grand corniche" of Crete - many tight turns and steep drop-offs! Well worth
the trip for the dramatic journey alone. The village of Chora Sfakia is both
quiet - busy with individual or independent tourists in the summer - in its
role as home and fishing village to local people, and a port for those
travelling by ferry to Agia Roumeli, Sougia, Paleochora and the unspoilt
island of Gavdos (see ferry schedules below). You could also approach the area
from Plakias and the east on roads which are slow-going but pass through
wonderful, distinctive Cretan scenery.
In antiquity a major exporter of meat to Athens, Sfakia is now a notorious
region with much history and the quieter form of tourism. It's wonderful,
rugged Lefka Ori mountains offer significant hiking opportunities ranging from
difficult to hard-walking.
